Muslim and Christian religious leaders and community members came together for the breaking of the fast at the Annual CIOGC Catholic-Muslim Iftar on August 31. Nearly 300 people attended the event hosted this year by the Islamic Community Center of Des Plaines.
Council Chairperson, Dr. Zaher Sahloul thanked special guest and speaker Cardinal Francis George of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Catholic community for its support of Muslims facing strife given the current climate.
Josephine Askia is a co-founder of the Ministry of the Faithful to God food pantry. She said she felt blessed to be a part of the event.
"You know when you have three religious communities sitting together in one room shoulder to shoulder, table to table, it's a peaceful event," she said.
Sakeena Malik loved the welcoming feeling she experienced and wants the different faith communities to learn from it. "I really wish my family was here to see it because they are Christian," she said. "Sometimes I invite my mom to the mosque so she can see what goes on so now it's just a matter of inviting my father now."
Sister Gwen Farry also came out to represent the local Catholic community. She appreciated the hospitality of CIOGC and ICC-Des Plaines. "I was especially happy to be coming this time with what's going on in the world," said Farry.
