Last year, your Council introduced the unique concept of a "Green Ramadan" campaign. It got noticed by President Obama's national "United We Serve" project and garnered attention in the media across the country. Most importantly, Senator Mattie Hunter (the Council falls in her district) introduced a resolution designating the month of Ramadan as a green month for all faith groups which was passed earlier this year.
Excerpts from SR0785:
“RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the leading role of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago in raising awareness about green issues and the environment within the faith community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That we designate the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, as a Green Month in the State of Illinois in order to promote awareness among faith communities about environmental issues, the reduction of carbon production, and the reduction of wasted water."
This year, let us pledge to strengthen the Green Ramadan initiative. Last year five member mosques signed up for Green Ramadan, this year we are hoping to take the message to at least 10 more.
We are all accountable to our Lord on the Day of Judgment for what we have done during our lifetime and the legacy they we leave after our death.
"We will register "in the book" what they have done and what footprints they have left, and everything we have accounted for in great details in a detailed book" (Quran 36:12)
